About English Detective
English Detective is a series of short illustrated mysteries in easy English for young learners. Two kids, Mara and Theo, solve a case in Lisbon, one four-minute part at a time.
What level is it?
The text is written for CEFR level A2: short sentences, everyday words, and about 140 words a minute so that a learner can follow. Every part teaches three new words. Each word is said aloud, spelled out, explained and used in a sentence, and the words come back in later parts.
How is a part built?
- A short recap of the case so far.
- The three words of the part.
- The story, with a question to think about halfway.
- The answer and a review of the three words.
- A cliffhanger that leads to the next part.
How is it made?
The pictures and the voices are made with AI tools, and every script is checked by programs for level, vocabulary and safety before it is published. We say so openly. The stories have no scary scenes and no shouting, and there are no brands in them.
Is it free?
Yes. It is free to watch, and free to play in class. This site has no ads, no cookies, no accounts and no forms.
Where do I watch?
On the English Detective YouTube channel, or on the part pages of this site.
